The stadium project was inspired on the one hand by a love of bridges and on the other by an intensive study of the various phases involved in the renovation of the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb. Marvelling at the Alamillo Bridge in Seville and the facade lighting of the new stadium in Munich, I designed this project on the basis of a synthesis and reduction of the architectonic elements to the essentials. The stands are supported by suspension through a web of steel cables that simultaneously support the ceiling. This web, together with the solar panels, supports a lightweight roof which has a checkered design. When the need arises, the empty squares of the roof can be quickly covered with rolled-up transparent nylon. From below, the solar panels seem to be lit up by lights of different colours, thus creating a checkered pattern using the light of the sky and artificial lighting of any colour chosen. The stadium is shell-shaped, and requires no external supports since it is self-supporting, using the roof as a support.
